ROAD TRIP

fav_thngs_cmbnd_thumb[1][1] One of my favorite things to do is to take a road trip. You may recall that my sweetheart and I celebrated our wedding anniversary on a recent Tuesday. On  that Thursday, he offered to take me to dinner in Memphis for a belated anniversary dinner. He said he needed to go by the hunting camp and take a few measurements anyway, and we could stop back in Memphis for dinner after he took care of that business. (Oh, he is a sweetheart, but just a little sneaky)! After following him all around the hunting camp (in dirt and weeds, with sweat dripping to my waste, and all kinds of bugs attacking me from every direction) for an hour and a half, I realized that I had been bribed to come along, so he would have someone to hold the other end of the measuring tape!)  I’m so important!  Isn’t he romantic?
I did capture a few interesting sights on the way to the camp. At the University of Arkansas experimental farm, I spotted purple leaf cotton. We grow a lot of cotton in my area of the country, but I’ve never seen it with purple leaves. It really was an amazing site to see a field of cotton with purple leaves. Apparently, this cotton is grown in Australia. It’s just like our Australian friends to make cotton growing look so pretty.

If you ever need a professional TMH (tape measure holder), I have passed all tests with flying colors, and I am proud to be the most esteemed of the TMH’s in my household!  (beaming with pride!)
We did eventually make it to Beale Street in Memphis.
BEALE ST- mos

We were a little confused by this sign on Beale Street, because there were a few motorcycles roaring up and down Beale Street.
no bikes We soon found out that Thursday night is “Bike Night” on Beale Street. Since it was the first Wednesday in weeks when the temperature had dropped from triple digits to double digits, EVERY biker in the area had shown up on Beale Street! It was fun to see and it really added to the excitement of the night for us.

You can tell I don’t get to the big city often, since a highlight for me was the neon signs!

I found a centerpiece for my table for the next Rooster party.

But my husband said he wouldn’t fit in the car!

daisy Some day I’ll take you inside the Orpheum Theatre. It is really a beautiful old theatre.
orpheum mos My sweetheart wanted to try a burger joint that we had always heard about. (He’s so romantic – burgers for our anniversary! But it gets even worse!) If you have a weak stomach, don’t read the Dyer’s Story on the menu below. Although the hamburger was delicious, I had to avoid thinking about the story of the restaurant as I was nibbling devouring that burger.
DYERS MOS
Before we went home, I had a little purple concoction!
PRILOSEC It really was a fun trip, and since I’m always thinking of a road trip (even if it involves a tape measure), no matter what time of the year it is, I am linking to Seasonal Sundays at The Tablescaper.

I have had a VERY busy week, and I’m really behind on visiting my favorite blogs. I am trying to catch up with all of the wonderful posts I’ve missed. Thank you for going on our road trip with me. (Aren’t you glad YOU didn’t have to hold one end of the tape measure for an hour and a half? Aren’t you glad you didn’t have to eat one of those deep fried burgers? The things I’ll do to get out of the office and get to go to the city to dine!) Please make sure you check out the other Favorite Things posts listed below. laurie

It sounds like a fun night (except for the Tape measure part!) As for the grease story, I guess it must be okay if they've been in business that long and the Health Department hasn't shut them down.... still, it's a little disconcerting. How did the burger taste??

I think that hamburgar place was on Food TV because I remember hearing that story about the grease.
Looks like a fun day...I would have wanted a ride on the carriage!

Looks like fun. We have only been through Memphis, but never visited. Happy Anniversary.

I think "Tape Measure Queen" and "Deep fried hamburgers" are a match made in heaven! Glad you had some 'purple' stuff! Happy Anniversary!!

Your evening sounds like it was full of adventures!! Beale Street sounds fun...I have heard it is similar to Bourbon St. in New Orleans...it looks that way! You took some great pictures, too. Love that big rooster. I don't know if I would have ordered the burger, I'm not brave that way! But thanks for sharing. ;-D

Happy Anniversary!! :-)

I have never seen cotton plants with green leaves - kinda pretty. I don't remember the last time I was on Beale St. - to many years ago. Have never eaten at Dyer's. Not sure what grease that old would do to me. It would probably take more than the "purple stuff" to straighten me out, and they would not be able to get a accurate cholesterol reading on me for a year after. :-D
Thanks for hosting again. Since making jewelry is one of my favorite things to do, I joined in.
Enjoy your weekend.

Laurie, I grew up around a whole lot of cotton fields and I've never even heard of purple leaf cotton. Thanks for sharing the photos and the information. Glad you and your sweetheart got to take a road trip together. I wish I could get my sweetheart to take a road trip with me. LOL
Have a great weekend! ~ Sarah

Happy Anniversary! My sister lives in Memphis (Collierville) and we have never done those fun things when I have visited! You know, I think if we actually thought about the food we eat out in restaurants, we might never eat out! I would have joined you in scarfing down one of those burgers! Love the photos and love the cotton! Have a wonderful weekend!

I am the end of the tape holder in this family. Sometimes I even get to read it. Not always am I believed, but I am always right.

Except for the sweat it sounded like a fun trip. Great photos.

Laurie I loved going along with you on your road trip and seeing all your pictures. Were you close to Graceland? I would love to see that someday.
The purple leaf cotton is really pretty. Very different.
I would of went in that Coyote Ugly saloon to check it out. I've seen it on tv and it looks like fun.
That red motorcycle is pretty fancy. It looks like a ton of bikes showed up.
What a fun anniversary dinner and road trip!!

What a fun trip to Memphis! Even if you were out there in the middle of a field holding a measuring tape for half the day! LOL! At least you were with your honey! Happy Anniversary to you both! :-)

Looks like a great night on the town Laurie!! Love that Rooster and I think if hubby tried real hard you could have mounted him on top of your car then you would have been the talk of the town!

Years ago, my husband invited me to go duck hunting with him. I was so excited to be included, until I realized, when it was time to wade out and retrieve the ducks, that his waders had a leak, and the only pair of good waders that he had brought with him...only fit me..they were way too small for him. I had a great time anyway, but he really did trick me. He knew that his waders had a hole the entire time! Thank you for stopping by my post. To make the floral arrangement in the candle holders, I put a small block of soaked oasis in the candle holders, cut the stems really short, and went for it. I also could have placed one of those old fashioned glass 'frogs' on the holder and worked with that. Those candleholders kind of flair out, like a martini glass shape. Come visit any time. Good morning Laurie,
Looks like you had a wild time in Memphis!
I visited there a few years ago with two Texan gals, they made me eat "deep fried Pie"!
Never again!
Have a wonderful weekend and thanks once again for being such a delightful host on Saturdays.

Hey Laurie, I really think you should have arranged for a truck to have the ginormous rooster hauled back home! LOL How fun to see the sights and check out all the neon lights. What would you do in Vegas?! You'd be giddy with delight, girl!

I love a road trip! Yours sounds fun, sneaky little tape measure mission and all.

My favorite part was the carriages.
I want to ride in a cinderlla coach like that!! And I want to do it at night when it's all lit up and do the queen wave.

Hi Laurie, happy anniversary! Sounds like yours and ours was almost the same day! Never been to Memphis, but loved the pics. When I was a little girl I picked cotton (for about 10 minutes!) and rode on the truck to the gin with my uncle. Loved the cotton-pickin' pictures! Linda

LOL, my dh is like yours! I remember a few years ago the first Home Depot closer than an hour away opened. It was on our Anniv, and yes, we went! We did go for
for dinner, but when people asked what we did, I say we went to HD!
That's a mighty big rooster. Maybe you could borrow it for the next rooster party!

What a fun trip. I would have been the tape holder just for a chance to see that purple cotton. I've never been to Beale Street even though my sister-in-law lives in Memphis. That and Graceland are on my list.

Belated Happy Anniversary, Laurie. Your photos are beautiful and you are so funny, lol. I have never seen purple cotton and there are lots of plantations around here. I took pictures of cotton pickers of the 1800's and how they transported them in barges along the MS River and I will post next Sat. We will travel in time, I guess. There is a place here who sells those giant roosters and I often aske myself and John who buys those? Now I know, lol....Christine

What great pics! Looks like a fun time minus the tape measuring incident. And the Cinderella carriage! Did hubby take you for a ride on that? I love it, so romantic!
And I'm so like you, I get excited about neon signs too and love visiting the big city since I am such a live in the boonies girl!
Hugs,

I loved the Red Rooster, almost as the much as the shiny Hog head i saw at the vendor on Sat Night! I have never seen purple leaf cotton either-Australia! Well, everyone who was in the audience today for Oprah is going to Australia so they can see it there too!
I remember Beale Street well, I could tell a tale on our blog-author but I won't...:>)Susie
