DINNER IN A BASKET TABLESCAPE

Cuisine Kathleen has issued a challenge for an apple tablescape.  Some of you may recall that when she issued her last challenge (a white plus one color tablescape), my senile self posted it two weeks early!  So, when the date of the challenge actually rolled around, I posted a second white plus tablescapeDinner in a Basket-Bargain Decorating with Laurie

Last week, Sarah, at Hyacinths for the Soul, pointed out that the tablescape I posted would be appropriate for Kathleen’s apple challenge next week.  Yikes!  I had done it again, but this time I had forgotten about the upcoming apple challenge, and I had used salad plates with apples and pears painted on them and dinner plates with apple blossoms!  Do you think I’m getting too senile to blog?

My first inspiration for this table came from a bag of small green apples I had in the pantry.  I used my apple green and navy table runner (found on sale at Pier One several years ago).  The table runner inspired my color scheme.

My second inspiration was baskets that I purchased when a local drug store had a going-out-of-business sale last year.  I thought the baskets could represent an apple-picking basket.  For a light supper, I filled each basket with chicken salad and egg and olive sandwiches, cheese, crackers, and grapes; covered it all with a napkin, and plopped a green apple on top.  It may just be a Southern thing, but when our evening meal is light, I call it supper, but when it’s a big meal, I call it dinner.  Do you do that?

Round navy placemats (from a sale at Kohl’s a couple of years ago) are topped by my green metal chargers and navy pottery plates (Made in Italy for Vietri-from an estate sale a few years ago).

Green and navy napkins (too old [me and the napkins] to remember where I purchased them) are held by branches from an apple tree (That’s my story today.  Depending on the theme of the table, those napkin rings could come from another type of tree on another post!).  I didn’t need flatware, because the baskets contain finger-foods.

A cutout of an apple, placed under a clear glass coaster, serves as a place card.  The blue handled drink holders are plastic.  I’ve had them forever, and they are what we grab any time we want something to drink, so they are in constant use at at our house.

A larger basket, purchased at the same time as the smaller baskets, holds apples and serves as a simple centerpiece.

I used my depression glass compotes to hold green apples, which I cut out to hold candles.

The sun has set.  It’s time for “supper”.  Come and get it!
