I CRAFTED A FASCINATOR!

Derby Day hats

Did you go to the Kentucky Derby or a Derby party?  We went to a Derby party, and as you can see above, a lot of very cute, very young girls with fabulous hats were in attendance.

There were a few people in attendance, who are closer to our age.

But, no matter their age, almost everyone was decked out in a wonderful hat.  I’ve been so busy with the campaign that I didn’t pull out my hat until Saturday morning.  I had a cute sunhat that I planned to wear.  When I pulled it out, I realized that it had seen its day long ago, and I couldn’t wear it.  So, desperation is what forced this “I can’t craft” person into trying to make a fascinator to wear to the party.

Making a Fascinator

I had no clue what I was going to do, but I assumed it would involve a glue gun, so I ran to Walgreens and bought a fabric-covered headband.  I thought the glue would adhere better to fabric.

Making a Fascinator

I have had a very long piece of this pleated fabric for years.  I bought it on a sale table for less than $5.00.  I decided that I might use a piece of it for my fascinator hat.

Making a Fascinator 3

I glued pieces of this fabric around the top and bottom of a cardboard circle from a used ribbon spool.  I knew I would be covering the center of it, so I didn’t worry about how that looked.

Making a Fascinator 4

The mother of a good friend of mine raised Peacocks, and I had a bunch of their feathers.  I shortened a few of them to glue to the center of the circle, again not worrying about how the center looked.

Fascinator 2

Years ago, a friend gave me this pretty pin with roses on it.  I pinned that to the ugly center, and then glued the whole thing to the headband.  I did have to secure the headband with a bobby pin to keep it from sliding forward when I looked down.

Making a Fascinator

Although I felt kind of silly (especially after my sweetheart asked if it was supposed to look like I had a rooster on my head), I hoped that others at the party would wear silly hats too.  They didn’t!

Derby Day Hats

The best part of the party was seeing my blogger friend, Susan.  Some of you may remember Susan’s blog, “Thoughts From Over The Rainbow”.  After learning that we lived an hour apart, Susan and I have gotten together a couple of times over the years, but I haven’t seen her in several years.  Once we started having grandbabies, we both got so busy that we were unable to get together.  It was such a fun surprise to run into her at the Derby party.

My “Fascinator” held together through the party, and is still intact!  Can I profess that I accomplished one craft?  laurie

I love your fascinator, Laurie! I think you did a great job. I wouldn't have even know where to start ~ after purchasing the head band. : ) Love all the hats. I'd like to go to the Derby one year, especially since we are only a couple of hours away.

The ladies look divine in their hats and your fascinator is so cute and you are so creative. Now let's see, will you wear this to church on Mother's Day? Too wild?

You should see the smile I'm wearing right now. I just love this, and I love your spunk. I so wish we lived closer to one another because besides touring your wonderful home full of treasures, I would just like to put on a fun hat (or fascinator) and chat with you.

I have never been to a derby party, and I really want to go to one.

Well I adore your makeshift hat/headband or whatever. I had posted about the Derby and would hope to attend someday just to buy and don a lavish hat, feathers and all. The more the better. You look smashing and I am sure a good time was had by all.
