I DON’T WANNA GO TO WORK

For years, I’ve been telling my sweetheart that if I didn’t have to go to work every day, I would prepare and serve him a delicious breakfast before he headed out to the trenches each day.
So, this post is for my husband of 43 years.  Are you looking at this, dear?  It’s our side-by-side breakfast place settings.  Isn’t that sweet?

Just slip your napkin out of that fowl, and
npkn rng
prepare yourself for the hearty breakfast you deserve to eat every morning.
mash
Go ahead, crack that egg.

Oh, you think the rooster egg cup is more fitting for your masculinity?  Okay, you can have the rooster egg cup.  See how agreeable I can be when I’m not having to race around to get ready for work.
rostr egg cup
You’re right.  That is a small juice glass for such a strong, handsome man.
oj glass
That’s why this rooster is filled with delicious, homemade orange juice.  Let me refill your glass for you.
pitcher
Yes dear, the orange juice did just come out of that rooster’s beak.  Would you like salt and pepper on your egg?
s & p
The oatmeal is still warm.  That will start your day right.
bowl
Here are a couple of those spicy sausages that you like.  I wouldn’t want you to go out into the world without a big breakfast.
plate
Let me just get the biscuits out of the oven.  Do you want white gravy, or
gravy
would you prefer some of my homemade strawberry preserves?
jelly

Did you notice I cut the last of the roses from the garden this morning – just a little touch of beauty for you before you face your day at the office.
rose
Well yes, those are faux eggs in that basket.  But if you’d like, some mornings I could fill it with real eggs.

No, I would not expect you to reach up to that basket to crack your egg.  I wouldn’t expect you to expend your energy on that task.  I would remove one of the egg cups from the basket and place it on your plate.  When you finished that egg, I would remove another egg cup to give you.
bskt mos
Sweetheart, can’t you just picture it?   This hearty, delicious breakfast - a kiss and a hug - and you’re off to start your day with a healthy happy heart and a full stomach.
place stg
Well, ah, yes, I realize there wasn’t any food in these pictures.  Um yes, I know I’ve never made strawberry preserves, but that is because I have to go to work five days a week. This was just a “dry” run -- just to give you an idea of how you could begin your mornings – if I wasn’t having to get ready for work.  What? You thought there wasn’t any food, because I didn’t have any grocery money?
full
Okay, you’ve made your point.  Stick a couple of pieces of bread in the toaster, while I go get  ready for work.  If there isn’t enough Welch’s grape jelly for both pieces of toast, I call dibs on the jelly.  No, I’m not as agreeable as I was earlier.
(Plates and bowls:  “Queens”; Napkins: Old Time Pottery years ago; Chargers:  J. C. Penny’s years ago; everything else: estate, garage, and flea market sales.)
I’m linking this shattered dream to Let’s Dish Wednesday at Cuisine Kathleen and to Tablescape Thursday at Between Naps on the Porch.  Thank you for coming for breakfast in my kitchen.  I apologize for the lack of real food.  Sadly, I have to get to the office. (P.S.}  This is totally fiction.  My sweetheart has never read my blog!) laurie

As usual Laurie...an extra special post. I love your settings and I love where you set your settings.:-)

PS: Since J retired he is coffee guy. That's a nice perk (pun intended).

Oh good story Laurie! Just bet you can't wait to get out that door every morning. The tablescape is gorgeous and fun, no food to cook even better. Toast and jam are a perfect way to start my day too.........This was great!

Well if I didn't have to work I would probably just decorate, craft and blog more. Very little breakfast cooking! Loved the post and your rooster inspired tablescape, Laurie.

Funny post! We won't tell HIM that I stayed home for years, and still never cooked that fictional breakfast. It's my feeling that "It's for better or worse, but not for breakfast or lunch!". Sally

Funny!! I am right there with you - never was one to cook breakfast very often and if I did, it became brunch and on those days don't ask me what is for lunch. :-D I just posted about my eating habits.
Hope the weather tonight is not as bad as "they" are saying it might be. :/

If your hubby doesn't want that wonderful breakfast I will be happy to take part in it! Even though I am home now my hubby does not want to sit and eat--he enjoys having his muffin and coffee at his desk with the newspaper, checking his email before the chaos hits! Yum, your imaginary breakfast sounds good, and I do love those rooster dishes. Linda

I would hope I could be that agreeable if I didn't work full time, but I am just not a morning person! I love your table and your sense of humor Laurie!

You are funny! Love the post! I used those black/white dishes in my post too but I didn't show the pattern in the center! I fell in love when I saw them and had to have them! You have some real cute roosters!

Hahahaha! My husband thought when he retired he was going to get a Sunday breakfast every day. Now he is the one who serves me cereal or pulls something out of the freezer for us both. I decided to retire, too! LOL

That was good fiction! I kept waiting for the announcement that you were retiring! Thanks for your sweet comment on my Facebook page. I love the post before this one, too. Your decorations are always awesome. It's so fun to see what people have collected over time!

Oh how pretty your rooster dishes are , It would be a shame to mess them up with runny ole eggs LOL

Honey you aren't the only one working after 43 years , I'm in the trenches with ya

Too funny...while I don't have to work outside the home, I still don't get up and fix breakfast...he leaves for work most mornings before 6! Love all of your rooster. Beautiful collection of dishes.

Oh, you are a fun one. Occasionally I fix breakfast and the hubby always exclaims, "What, a real breakfast?"

Cockadoodle CUTE! The pix are great and yes, if you have enough jelly for one piece of toast, that's good enough!

OK, Laurie...I can see that this election year has gotten to you. You are campaigning REALLY HARD here! :-) Someone needs to put a bug in your husband's ear to actually read this post!!!!! You've put forth some valid points, and he NEEDS to read them for himself! :-) I gotta tell you how much I love that chicken wire motif on the napkins. COOL!!!! This is a fun and very inviting breakfast table! Enjoy your weekend...'cause the work week starts up again on Monday unless you plead your case directly to hubby! :-)

Ha!Ha!Ha! I knew it would end up this way. I know that cause your sweetheart cannot work without you, Laurie. There's just nobody to take your place cause you're so efficient at work. Sorry! Your pretend tablescape and breakfast is really good while it lasted though, lol...Christine

Yep, you really need to retire! I highly recommend it! We don't have money to go anywhere, but the lack of stress from work is price less.!
Love your make believe breakfast, but bring on the bacon, balance out all that chicken stuff, lol
Very sweet, and the sentiment too!
Thanks for linking to Let's Dish!
