DECORATING WITH VALENTINE CARDS

Valentine Decor-Bargain Decorating with Laurie

To add more Valentine décor to the family room, I opened the doors to the hutch and stuffed Valentine cards in front of the china I already store in this hutch.

Some of the cards are vintage. Some came from my mother's keepsakes, and some were mine and my children's keepsakes.

The best vintage cards in my collection came from my friend, Charlie Ann, who decided to give up her collection and made me the lucky recipient. There are several from her collection that are "mechanical". The little girl with the fishing basket is one of those.

I'm not sure if mechanical is the correct term to use for these cards. These cards were given when mechanical meant using your fingers to move a piece on the back to make the figure on the card do something.

The little girl with the fishing basket pulls a heart from her basket and rolls her eyes.

The painted wooden piece was a gift from our son when he was in elementary school.

Some of the cards I've kept are much more current, but they'll be vintage some day!

The shelf above displays three of the mechanical cards. The little girl with the camera pulls the heart from the camera and rolls her eyes. The figure next to her waves her towel and rolls her eyes, and the one in the straw hat rolls her eyes. Can you imagine what fun it was to receive one of these cards back when there weren't battery powered toys or video games?

The heart hanging from the shelf above this one is a paper napkin my mother had saved from a Valentine party. The little sailor boy on this shelf is my favorite mechanical card. His sailboat, his arm, his legs, and his eyes move.

I was going to demonstrate these mechanical cards in a video on this post. I just want to say how much I admire bloggers who make fabulous videos. It is not as easy as they make it look. After hearing my Arkansas twang and seeing my old-lady face in the videos I tried, I was convinced that videos are not my forte. A big  high-five to those who do such an amazing job with them.

Thank you for coming to see more of my Valentine cards. It won't be long until heart day arrives. Have you displayed any of your favorite Valentine cards at your house?
