PAINTED CHINA CABINET-FINALLY!

Almost a year ago, I shared pictures of our kitchen in a post, and  I asked for opinions about a china cabinet in our kitchen.  Some of the cabinetry in our kitchen is painted cream, and some of it is painted a blue-grey color.  I was trying to decide whether I wanted to paint the cabinet cream or try to match the blue-grey color of our other cabinets.

My Mother always called a piece of furniture like this a “breakfront”.  I’m not sure what makes it a breakfront instead of a china cabinet, but I’m calling it a china cabinet, because I’ve noticed that is the common term for these in Blogville.

After a year of mulling over what to do with this piece, I had almost decided to leave it alone, as some suggested when I asked the question on my blog.  However, it is not in great condition, and I frequently see similar pieces in junk stores, and they are not very expensive, so I decided I would be happier with the piece if it were painted.

In my previous post, I showed you the outdoor cushions I painted. I am a very messy painter, so since my fingernails, arms, and legs were already painted Annie Sloan’s Antique Violet, from painting this cabinet, I painted the cushions the same color.  Does it match our blue kitchen cabinets?  Nope.  After thinking about it awhile, I came to the realization that a bargain shopper doesn’t have matching colors in their home (at least, this bargain hunter doesn’t).  If I found a china cabinet, painted a blue color, at a low price, I would purchase it and put it in our kitchen even though the blue color was not the same as our cabinetry.  I didn’t want to sand and prep the piece, so I knew I wanted to use chalk paint, and I decided I could paint it whatever color I wanted.  I have to say, I’m loving it!

You may be able to see the corner of my grands’ play hutch next to this cabinet.  Since this is also their kitchen play corner, I decided to not do a lot of distressing on the cabinet.  The grands will quickly take care of the distressing for me.

You may be wondering why I painted the drawer pulls.  The top “drawer” is  a drop-down desk, so the solid piece of wood for the desk covers the screws for the “drawer” pulls.  I did remove all of the other drawer pulls before painting, but when I put them back on, I didn’t like the way they broke up the color on the piece.  That, combined with my messy paint job, and my cluttered shelves, just made the cabinet look too cluttered (yes, even I think something can look too cluttered).  So, off came the drawer pulls again, so I could paint them the same color as the cabinet.

It was impossible to get a photo of the top without glare on the glass.  I thought I was so smart to put magazine pages behind the decorative trim on the glass before I painted, so I wouldn’t have such a hard time getting my messy paint strokes off of the glass.  I’m afraid some pieces of the pages may be permanently stuck to the back of some of that wood trim!

I painted the cabinet this weekend, while my sweetheart was at hunting camp.  He didn’t notice it all afternoon after he got home. That night, our daughter came over and commented on it, and then he started asking where I had purchased it.  When I told him it had been there for years, he asked what color it had been before.  He’s so observant!

I agonize over painting stained furniture all the time. Then when I decide to paint, I usually go white or black so I never have to paint it again if I get sick of the color. I like that you went for the color!

I love it. It turned out beautiful. It's hard to believe it's the same piece of furniture. Had to laugh when you said your hubby didn't notice it.

I love it! And it's the blue of a plate hanging over it on the right. What a nice look in your kitchen, Laurie. It will give you so much pleasure to look at.

Much pleasure to your husband too, now that he knows you didn't go out and buy it!

Laurie, the baby's name is Rachel and is doing well. Thank you so much for the prayers!

Ok, now THIS is the type of painted piece I can get into. First, it already belongs to you and you are doing it for YOU. Second, it looks prettier and more warm and kitchen-y that color. (I can't remember which color I opined about in the original posts, but I remember giving my two cents worth.) Third, the lines are so streamlined that changing it on down the line if you change your style will be a snap.

Love it and am giving it the two thumbs up. (And doesn't it showcase your schtuff in and on the top of it just beautifully!!!)

I love the color - it makes your blue items on top and behind show up so much more! Did you stitch the samplers that surround it?

Laurie, what a great color you selected to use! It really accentuates all of your other blue items. I think it's gorgeous and looks so much better painted!

Laurie, this piece looks fantastic! I have a hutch painted in this color also and I love it, too. Funny about your husband! I love it that he never even noticed it there before. :)
