"Children are made readers on the laps of their parents." Emilie Buchwald
As a proud grandmother of three I treasure the moments I have spent reading books to my granddaughters and letting them point out the characters they recognize or make the sound of the animal on a page.
On my only trip to New York City my six year old granddaughter’s only request was that I bring her back a picture of “The Plaza” where Eloise lives. After reading Kay Thompson’s Eloise books to all of the granddaughters, I was like a child myself – overwhelmed when I saw the Grand Ballroom, The Palm Court and all the beautiful chandeliers. Thanks to the illustrator Hilary Knight everything I saw looked almost familiar after reading the books several time.
Laurie thanks for sharing your books and reminding me of the importance of reading to our children.

I have the biggest warm fuzzies after reading this post. Books are a pleasure of my heart. OLD books are my favorites. They take me to long ago days and long ago places.

You featured some of my favorites here today. I don't know what there is about "A Child's Garden of Verses" that grabs my heart even today.

I write that portion of the poem at the end in cards that I give young moms when I give them picture books as gifts. I believe every word of it.

This was a treasure of a post.

On our cruise, we had questions about both Beatrix Potter and about "The Little Engine That Could." I remember these well, and my team got the answers correct.

Laurie, How wonderful to have these books! I love the old stories and the illustrations in old books. Now, I'm not too sure I remember seeing Mama and Papa Goose before. The little engine was always a favorite. I learned to read when I was four years old and I will probably go to my grave with a book in hand. :-)

Laurie, I love these! Children's books are some of my favorite posessions, and I love to read. My favorite books are biographies of great men and women... I've just read one on George Washington that is excellent. And these sweet children's books are such wonderful companions for little ones and big ones alike.

XO,

Sheila :-)

Wonderful post, Laurie! I have a lot of my childhood favorites, too, and they are among my dearest treasures. I was so blessed to have a mother who read to me -- over and over and over. It's thrilling to see my grandchildren reading books I loved as a child.

Oh, my favorite collectible!! I love children's books. You would not believe my collection. I think I have more children's books than the local library. I love your collection, especially the one that pops out into three dimensions. I gave my mom one that opened up into a doll house.

This post makes me want to spend some time curled up in front of a fire revisiting old friends. The books I still have, the fireplace I'll have to improvise.
Hard to type with cats helping.
