HOUSE BEAUTIFUL (Michael S. Smith)
This room had me at the red checked curtains. I could definitely be comfortable in this pretty room. It has some very formal pieces in it, but the checked window curtains seem to bring all of it down to an inviting level. Not too formal to make a person feel uncomfortable. I love a wonderful mix of patterns.
Maybe I’m on a check “kick”, but I love these blue checked curtains. I think the blue and white chinoiserie wallpaper and vases, the lovely fretwork on those chairs, and the wonderful light fixture, are beautiful and very formal. The checked curtains tone down the formality and make the room more interesting and inviting.
Oh how I love the mixture of red toile and red buffalo checks. I also love the mixture of blue, red, and yellow. Of course, I couldn’t have that dark blue sofa at my house. It would show all of the dogs’ hair. Did you notice those formal window treatments? The rest of the room, including the color combination, is so casual that the window treatments don’t feel ostentatious.
This photo is an example of taking a room to a more formal level. I think of the kitchen as a casual area, almost unworthy of elegance. This unexpected elegant vignette is in a kitchen. A beautiful lamp, an urn filled with pears and a cloche turn the utilitarian kitchen into an elegant room.
I didn’t even realize I had collected so many photos of checked fabrics until I started preparing this post. I think this back entryway is so inviting. To me, this says “welcome”. Love the stone floor, of course the red check curtains, French doors, blue and white chinoiserie, and what appears to be cubbies for coats and shoes. See that pretty piece of antique furniture? It has a formal look, and so does the runner on the floor, but all of the other elements turn this into a casual room.
What a serene blue and white look. The wonderful mirror, chandelier, and dining table are so grand, but the cute pleated skirt slipcovers seem to bring the elegance down to a manageable level. It looks like the chair covers have a monogram on them – another plus in my book.
Do you mix formal and casual elements? I love the way these rooms feel more interesting to me, because they mix those two elements together. Thanks for coming by, and I hope you have a good weekend. laurie
